Background
During a significant part of the 20th century, Malmö was known as a typical "labor city" that was characterized by its considerable ship- and construction industry. From the beginning of the century to the mid seventies, Kockum Industries was world leading within ship building technology. However - already in the late 19th century, the city of Malmö started an expansion that meant filling the marina in the area that today creates Malmös latest inner city district - The western harbors.
Today - one can only envision what the old city used to be like and the heritage from the prosperous industrial era is brought into the 21 century in something that is commonly called the "post industrial knowledge city". The western harbors has by this transformed into a neighborhood - known for its exclusive residential areas and beautiful coastline.
In this melting pot of remarkable architecture, gourmet
restaurants and fashionable boutiques an uncommon pioneer project
is located. Here - the most expensive land in Sweden is made
available for young peoples ideas and creative potentials. A
cultural venue is developed in stages and contains - amongst other
things, one of Europe's most advanced concrete skateparks as well
as unique "boulder rocks" for climbers. In addition to these
"extreme sport" facilities, Stapelbäddsparken also include several
square meters of unexploited land and an old slipway that is the
only one left since the old ship building days.
But then again - it is not the specific arenas that makes this
place special - it is how they came to be, and what people now is
making out of them.
