Premises

Breaking new boarders

The second stage of STPLN - Stapelbäddsparken is most of all about the old slipway next to the skate park, also used as kockums workers dining- and dressing rooms.  3000 square meters of raw industrial building not re-entered since the mid seventies now function as exhibition hall, theater scene, concert arena, workshop or whatever people like to use it for. The main purpose with making these premises available is that people with ideas should have somewhere to express and develop these. The building is not yet renovated and is actually not fit for these kinds of activities, but if they are going to function properly in the future we need to know what people make with it if not restricted. The organization set to care for this project - "Föreningen Stapelbädden" supplies organizations, individuals or unorganized groups of people with support of different kind. This concept means that one should be able to get the support/inspiration one need - be it equipment, coaching or just someone to bounce ideas with.

In the past two years STPLN - Stapelbäddsparken has evolved in a great way. A lot of people - young and old, are showing interest in using the building to present or develop their work. Everything from art exhibitions and workshops to concerts, film festivals and theater plays. Until now we have allowed the content to grow freely and we have tried different working methods and activities to see what is successful and what is not. However - the most important part is that whoever uses the facilities is responsible form them and we trust them with keys and whatever equipment we can offer. We like to believe that once a person enters Stapelbäddsparken and gains responsibility for the premises, this person also require a feeling of ownership and automatically becomes a part of the place. This person get to own the building for the time needed and also has a chance to transform it or arrange it in order to create an adequate atmosphere for his or hers particular event.

There are other situations where people need more backing in order to create their event or project. In these cases we have a person working as a project-coach. The project-coach spends time with the people involved and assists them to proceed with their idea. We for example offer help concerning marketing, budget, project plans, financial support and sometimes even technical support.

What distinguishes Stapelbäddsparken from other similar projects is the unusual cooperation between the municipality and the nonprofit organizations working with the developing processes. The city of Malmö functions as a supporting structure and is also financing large parts of the work done here. But this does not mean controlling what is coming out of this commitment. What the money is used for is entirely a result of how the users are managing these possibilities. Hence - the people working with Stapelbäddsparken take their starting point in what motivates people and them give them the tools to work their ideas trough, without governing or controlling the outcome. And this is what both creates and constructs Stapelbäddsparken physically and mentally.
